One Fine Day at Papua

So I’m officially no longer a full time student! All the hard work paid off. I passed my thesis defense on this early april and I’ll be graduating in July 2013. I’m a big kid now. And with this age comes responsibility.

I’m no longer working as a part time teaching assistant at information systems laboratory. My new title is SAP Junior Business Analyst at Freeport Indonesia, an affiliate of Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold, one of the worlds largest copper and gold producers. I started 2 months ago and I’m very excited to learn all about SAP!

Entering the second month, I was blessed to be given a chance to go for a knowledge transfer on jobsite. This is my very first business trip. Many people tell me that I am very fortunate that i get to travel even during my ojt period. I will never be thankful enough for what God has done for me.

Travelling is one of my interests. There is always something interesting to observe and learn when we land up in new place meeting new people. So, while I was very excited that I would be going for the business trip, i was feeling a bit worried and afraid. When I mentioned I was going to Papua, my families and several colleagues suddenly became surprisingly. “Will you be safe?” “Where you will stay?” they wondered.

Okay.. Let me explain. Kuala Kencana is not what people think about Papua, such as men with koteka or houses built in tree-tops. Kuala Kencana was conceived by Freeport Indonesia as the administrative base for their mining operations in the highlands of Irian Jaya just beyond the town of Tembagapura. Kuala Kencana was designed as a model for future urban development in Indonesia. Kuala Kencana district are still in Timika town is not to be entered into the random. Allowed to enter only those of the PT. Freeport Indonesia and the use of visitor ID card Freeport. The town is home for approximately 3,000 Indonesian and Expatriate residents. It includes a national and international school, bowling alley, shopping mall, golf course, several restaurants, and food stalls, a swimming pool, tennis and badminton courts and numerous other facilities. All these facilities make Kuala Kencana be like a city within a city.

So, here’s my two weeks in photos!

Edwin, Greetings to you. My name is Robert Bottger from Cairns, Queensland, Australia.
I read your report with much interest. Why? I was associated with the design of New Town, now Kuala Kenchana. I was the design office manager for GHD, an engineering consulting firm in Cairns. GHD began working with Freeport Indonesia on the Timika Airport project and it then extended to the civil engineering design of New Town. It was an extra-ordinary civil engineering challenge to construct the town in a rain forest utilising unusual design techniques. Unfortunately I never got to see the town and would appreciate if you would email some photos of the Boulevard Road, Ring Road, Town Centre and other amenities. That would be most appreciated. Regards, Rob B
